COMPROMISE

A long distance lies ahead of me
At the other end of it you are
Surrounding me is uncertainty
The question, “Will I soon be where you are?”

A deep breath I take for the jumble
It’s overwhelming and causes worry
I want to talk but instead I fumble
And end up with an “I’m sorry.”

I wonder if you truly hear me
As well as worry that you do
I want to know you’re near me
And know you want it, too.

I don’t want to hurt you anyhow
I know that will hurt me, too
And I’d rather give up my happiness now
Than to put you through that hell
